I've got the blues...

Hi y'all!

Actually I'm not bluesy at all, it's just easy title for this post because my woman is out (classic blues theme...) and tonight vibe is from mighty Muddy Waters.

I got this nice 7' recently and it was quite a random buy (I appreciate Blues of course, but I don't know it extensively...).

The title was a mystery to me but hopefully Wikipedia helps to understand : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_the_Conqueror

Shortly, the sond is about a plant "used as one of the parts of a mojo bag. It is typically used in sexual spells of various sorts and it is also considered lucky forgambling. It is likely that the root acquired its sexual magical reputation because, when dried, it resembles the testicles of a dark-skinned man."
...I like those wikipedia academic definitions!

The B side has no sexual meaning at all as it is titles "short dress woman", hmm, the blues...

It seems those title are from young Muddy Waters, before he became a blues legend and inspired the Stones to choose the group name and Led Zeppelin for their first (and best) period recording.

Hope you like it as much as I do,

All the best to you,

Peace,

Ben

Satisfaction

Hello fellow music lovers,

Tonight feature is a quite rare and (in my humble opinion) enjoyable dub LP.
I am not usually fond of dub albums but this one, apart of the super cool silk screened sleeve, has something special to my ears.

The Revolutionaries rythmns choice is baaaaad, and the Ossie Hibert dub treatment is full of finesse.
The copy I hold is on the Flames label, but I know there is an eponym LP on Live and Learn with another track listing and sleeve design (way less exciting).

I found a topic on Blood and Fire website stating it's the same album :
satisfaction in dub is a ossie hibbert/winston jones produced lp (on flames and on live & love and on 3rd world labels) although with different titles and includes dub versions to Whip them dennis brown/ see that rastaman jnr ross/ jah man f mckay/ judgement time-jnr ross "

Hope you like the set as much as I do and, once again, feel free to comment so I don't think I'm all alone here ;-)

Peace,

Ben

Some latin ting

Hello all,

End of the WE here, so I feel like posting some salsa tunes to cheer up before work week starts.
I never learned how to properly dance salsa and it's a shame, cause I like the feeling of it (and my woman would love me to...).
I like it quite raw, better old school colombiana salsa, or cuban, or whatever comes without too much strings in it.

So, without further introduction, here you have the tunes of the day.

I specially like the last 7', if you understand spanish, you will laugh out loud : "spank her spanker, but spank her without pity...", fifty shades of grey inspiration?

Bueno, mi gente, a bailar ahora!

As always, if you have more info about the tunes, please let me know (I dig salsa, but I know nothing about it...).

C U soon,

Peace!

New killer rarity 7' in

Hello all,

I've been quite busy (new work) so it took me some time to post a new sound.

So here is a nice, and quite rare 7', straight from yard.

It's form a singer called Derrick Screechie (different to Delton Screechy, better known artist of the early 80's) and it's titled Black Romeo (you'll find the A side and the dub on the zip file linked).

The dub is a killer one by scientist, which seems to have been massively played by Shaka back in the days (not the A side, which beeing a lovers lyrics song not suited the mystic message of Shaka).

As featured on labels below, there have been pressings under a wrong label (the one I got is an example...)

Love the militant drumming on this one.

Only one other 7' on the Al Jr. label by this artist as far as I know, if someone has more info, you're more than welcome to share it with us in comments.

Well, that will be all for tonight I guess, I'm gonna finish my glass of Caroni 20 years old (black currant, vanilla and some tar = massive Trinidad rum!) and have some rest.

Peace to all and see you soon!

At last a place to share my passion!

It took me a long time to finally get to make my own blog.
Long time browsing other pages, long time hesitating, but now is the time. So people, what will you find here?
Basically music and other related topics. I'm am man of diverse taste so you will get Reggae, Salsa, Dub, Samba, Jazz, Afrobeat, Highlife, Cadence, Calypso, Saharian music, Blues, Funk, Rhythm & Blues, Boogaloo, Rock, Hip Hop and more...

My main focus will be music on vinyl, both originals and repress, maybe I will post about reedition labels, maybe some artists bio, maybe a rum critic to had some (alcoholic) fuel to your listening pleasure, we'll see...

So, without more introduction, I would like to share a first tune with you, and, as friends should expect, it's reggae related (I'm sipping a 15 years Zacapa rum while writing so pardon my English :-)

Share Roots Rebels - Rock down the blues 12'.zip - 27 MB

Here you have the full 12' A Side of this unknown (according to discogs it's their only release...) British reggae band. I have been connected to this tune for a long time : when I first began to browse the web for more records some years ago, I participate to a sale listing on eBay for this record. Except the label had been removed (quite usual in reggae...) or it was a blank or a dubplate, I don't remember precisely.

What I do remember is that there was a little extract of the tune and it was, hum...a damn' killer Brit' reggae tune! The band name was not mentioned and the tittle was badly handwritten as "Rock down the Globe".
I asked some specialists friends about it but no one had a clue and the record ended sold at crazy price...

So, years went by and I kept the little extract somewhere, always hoping to get my hand on this plater.
Until this 12' finally appeared on my radar, the title reminding me of this personal graal, and I finally got it.

It appeared it's a reasonably rare material, but not totally unknown as I first expected.

There is 3 files in the Zip attached which are the 3 parts of A side, in a classical reggae showcase 12' : the song, the dub, and a "singjay" version (it's not really like a jamaican DJ, you'll see). Usually I'm not fond of DJ versions but this one is special in my opinion. I particularly like the theme of hesitating between having a good time at home with a young girl or going to a "late night blues". And, as you should expect from a reggae lover, the singer finally chooses to go to the dance!

OK folks, I leave you with the song, hope you'll appreciate it and I will try to update this post with pictures of the label (done now).

If anyone has more information about the band, please share it with us.

Good night from France,

Peace,

Ben
